About the Base64 Encoder & Decoder
The Freemium.Tools Base64 encoder converts text or files into Base64 and decodes Base64 back into readable text, entirely inside your browser.
Base64 rewrites binary data using 64 safe characters so it can travel through systems that only accept text, such as JSON payloads, email bodies, data URLs and configuration files.
Because encoding happens locally, you can safely paste tokens, credentials or private files without them ever reaching a server.
How to use it
- 1Choose a direction. Pick Text to Base64 or Base64 to text.
- 2Paste or drop. Paste the string, or drop a file to get a ready-to-use data URL.
- 3Copy the result. Copy the output or download it as a text file.
Frequently asked questions
Is Base64 encryption?
No. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it instantly, so never use it to protect secrets.
What is URL-safe Base64?
It replaces + with - and / with _ and drops the = padding so the string can be used inside a URL or filename without escaping.
Why is my encoded file bigger?
Base64 represents every 3 bytes as 4 characters, so the output is roughly 33% larger than the original file.
Can I encode an image for CSS or HTML?
Yes. Drop the image in and you get a complete data URL you can paste straight into a src or background-image value.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Everything is encoded and decoded in your browser tab.
