HTML Entity Encoder
Escape characters for HTML, or decode entities back to readable text.
Runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
About the HTML Entity Encoder
The Freemium.Tools HTML entity encoder converts characters such as <, >, & and quotes into safe HTML entities, and decodes entities back into readable text, with a live preview of how it renders.
Showing code samples on a web page, pasting content into a CMS field or emailing HTML all require escaping the characters a browser would otherwise treat as markup.
Paste your text to encode the reserved characters — optionally including accents and emoji as numeric entities for older email clients — or paste encoded text to get plain readable content back.
How to use it
- 1Pick a direction. Text to entities, or entities back to text.
- 2Paste your content. Any snippet of text or HTML.
- 3Copy the result. Check the render preview to confirm it shows what you expect.
Frequently asked questions
Which characters must be escaped in HTML?
At minimum the ampersand, less-than and greater-than signs, and both quote marks inside attribute values. This tool handles all five plus common symbols.
Should I encode accents and emoji?
Modern pages using UTF-8 do not need to, but older email clients and some CMS fields do. Switch on the extra option when targeting those.
Does escaping prevent cross-site scripting?
Escaping output is a core defence, but it must be applied in the right context and combined with server-side validation. Treat this tool as an authoring aid, not a security control.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Encoding and decoding both happen in your browser.
